Short-Term Running Goals:

Summer:

build to up 70+ miles per week, occasional core and races, follow Jake's school's summer training plan until about August when I'll focus more on the half marathon; new goal: under 17 for 5k. 16:30 for 5k by the end of the summer

 Fall:

By next October I'm shooting to be under 1:20 for an Albany, NY half marathon.

Otherwise, just keeping up the miles so that I'm healthy, and possibly competitive, for a long time to come.

Long-Term Running Goals:

Eventually I would like to run a marathon, hopefully going under 3 hours, maybe significantly so. I'll think about that one when it's more in sight. I hope to continue improving my 5k time in the meantime.

Personal:

I'm an undergraduate at Brown University and part of the running club there. I'm told I should read Once a Runner, especially now that it's in print again... We'll see if that happens. Ok, so I read it, haha. It's awesome.

workout day, first workout from the actual half marathon plan from my high school coach. workout was 4x1.5 mile, 3 min rest, 80% race pace. i just decided to shoot for 6 min pace. i realized again today that i hate being lactose intolerant. last night's jameson irish whiskey did NOT help. first rep i took way too easy since i didn't take the workout seriously. i thought it would be easy for some reason. anyway, i go through half, then mile, then 1.5 in 6:20 pace, finishing in 9:30. it was easy the first 800, then i'd try to go faster but just wouldn't. mostly because i probably held back. it's like i said at the start of the summer, can't run workouts as if they're easy days. it'll just hurt more. anyway, i realized at that point that i HAD to get to a bathroom. since my first rep kinda blew and my rest was also screwed with the bathroom stop, i started over. this time, things went better:

9:02

9:00

8:49 (gah)

8:46

i guess i woke up after number 2 and started going out a little faster and pulling back to 6 min pace by the end. i would not have expected that, since after that second rep i got pretty lightheaded and felt badd. i still had some of the earlier issues in between sets, and i thought i wouldn't make it to the bathroom after the last one, but it worked out. also, i sweat so much that it got in my eyes and i couldn't open them for awhile until i got to a fountain to rinse them. my hands were too covered in sweat from wiping my face or adjust my pants to be of any use. on a better note, the weather was perfect.

The weather is not perfect if you sweat that much. But good making a recovery and decent given it was 7.5 miles of workout. But I know you are in better shape than this.

i guess i meant the temperature was perfect lol, but it was humid. idk, probably psyched myself out or something. i gotta get my mental game back on track. anyway, what pace do you think i should be calling "race pace"? what do you think i can run for this workout? i don't exactly know its purpose, i just know 80% race pace. friday i will be doing 2 miles, 1.5, 1 mile, 2x800 at "race pace", and i assume same 3 min rest. what pace do you think i should be at for that? 5:45? i don't think i'm in 5:45 shape for the half

Yeah these are wierd workouts. I think it would be a harder workout to go race pace because you are gonna think its gonna be easy and you wont psych yourself up for it. I think 5:45 sounds good. And make the recoveries 1 min.

Both the last workout and this next one are threshold work split up. Its what daniels calls "cruise intervals" and he does 1min recovery for every mile. So you could do 2miles, 2min recovery, 1.5 miles, 1.5min recovery, ect.
